Fine Yarn

I bought some super fine yarn-(probably light like 2- but who knows, I bought it on Temu) It is nice, but I don’t think I have a needle (s) small enough. I tried with 4 mm but the pattern seemed really holey because the needle was too big-I don’t know where I can get a super small set of needles and no idea what to make with it. I would appreciate any ideas or suggestions. Thanks!

What is the wpi? You can generally use a us size 1 to us size 4 with sport (2) weight yarn…

You could do something lacy. Fine yarn and a larger needle can be a good combination for some lace patterns. What type of needles do you want? Straight, circular, or dpn? Knowing what country you’re in is helpful too. If I find something in the US ordering from outside the US could be prohibitive for shipping.

I used a number 1 yarn for a long leeve sweater, it’s a lovely fabric, light and kind of see through if the light is behind (looks solid when wearing), very soft and lots of drape. I thought I’d need very small needles but when I swatched I preferred the fabric with the 3.5mm needle, so not that small after all.
I don’t think you’re in the UK but if you are then Woolwarehouse has 2mm needles in straight, dpns, fixed circular, and a range of brands and materials. The needle sizes go up by 0.25mm so there are quite a few to select from. They do ship abroad but the cost might not be worth it for a couple of needles.

What you make will depend on what you like and how much yarn you have. I chose a stockinette sweater pattern but changed to a garter ridge every 4th row to add a bit of texture, the yarn I used was very splitty and I found it wasn’t suitable for lace stitches, or at least I would not have enjoyed working it in lace due to the problems of the splitting yarn and hard to see small black stitches.

What kind of yarn is it? Cotton, wool, mohair? Smooth, tweedy, fluffy?

Does it not give any suggeted needle size on the yarn band? It sounds finer than a #2–sport weight which would be slightly open on 4mm needles, but not actually holey. You can figure this out by wrapping the yarn around a ruler or pencil and counting how many wraps there are in an inch.

Once you know the yarn weight, you can more easily find what size needles are considered best for it. https://www.craftyarncouncil.com/blog/ydkwydk-guide-yarn-weights

What kind of needles do you like? Metal? Wood? Most companies go down to 3mm, and some like ChiaoGoo go as small as 2mm.
