Help, I thought I was buying yarn on ebay, it arrive today and doesn’t look right at all.
So its come in a skein, which is ok, and there are 3 or 4 different strands that make up the yarn, the problem is they don’t look like they have been wound together. So if I was to knit it as is, it would be like holding 3 or 4 seperate yarns together. What do I do? Should I knit as is, or do I need to wind/spin them?
Do you need pictures to understand what I am saying? Will it help if I post the link to the ebay seller?
Unless you’re a spinner, I don’t think you can ply them yourself. Many things are knit with more than one strand, and are very pretty, so you can try. They will have to be in a ball, though, so you should wind the strands together.
I can’t tell you how much this upsets me. Its being sold as yarn, there is no mention that you will need to spin/ply it yourself.
as per ebay

I’m in Europe, and undestand yarn to be already plyed, is it an American term to use yarn for just fibers, or is the seller not telling the whole truth?
I did an ebay search and found a link to the yarn. It looks like they’ve got a good feedback record. Maybe if you contact them with your concerns, you can find an amicable way to resolve it.
It seems to be the same yarn from the same store; the one I linked was just listed on the US site instead of the UK site. Anyway, I think you can just knit with it as is. Lots of people knit with two or more strands held together to get a thicker gauge from a thinner yarn.
sorry it cam up as a different yarn teh first time, or maybe it was just another ebay window I had open (this stash you guys talk about is very addictive )
I really wanted to knit the clapotis with the black yarn, but I’m not sure that it will work.
She says that the yarns are combined and indeed they are –
each strand is a separate full-fledged yarn, not raw unspun fiber.
Many patterns look wonderful knit with combined yarns
and many knitters make their own yarn combinations to
add richness to their projects or to achieve a different gauge.
It’s pretty yarn – just wind it into balls (which will keep it from tangling) and knit with all the strands. Try to use needles with fairly blunt tips and be careful to pick up all the strands with each stitch. If it’s the right gauge for the Clapotis, go for it.
But if you must, contact the seller. She seems to be very open to resolving problems and has a generous return policy.
I have only purchased yarn at my local yarn store. I was thinking of buying some on ebay or from the drops pattern which is in Britian. Am I making a mistake doing this? Is it buyer beware when you get it off the internet? The one wool I was thinking of getting is Alpaca and is only $6.35 a ball and only $6.50 postage they say, but I am from Canada so do I not have to pay extra taxes and duty to come in from another country? Also, the alpaca pattern says to knit with 2 threads. Is that because the yarn is so thin and poor quality? It is suppose to be 18sts=4"
Thin does not mean poor quality. Yarn comes in many thicknesses. Shipping between countries is often more expensive–each place is different, though.
I’ve mostly had good experiences buying on-line from different shops. I don’t generally buy from ebay, though, just because I don’t have any experience with it, not because of any bad experience.
You can often ask around if anyone has had experience with a particular vendor to get even more feedback.
I’ve bought from ebay and have bought good and bad yarns, but i’ll use them for something.
As far as import tax, yes you do over a certain amount of $. Usually the shipping fee isn’t included in the amount allowed. In the UK they allow about £19.00 worth of goods import tax free.## Just found this it’s a very long link make sure you grab it all.
Dee.
I’ve done a number of projects from two or more strands held together. As the other posters recommend, you just knit them together. After a while, they kind of twist themselves as you knit. You don’t have to worry about whether or how they do…it’ll look great.
As for winding them, you can just grab the three yarns together and wind as you would any hank of yarn into a ball. I’ve also knit from separate skeins without winding them into a ball – again, you just hold them together. No biggie. Your knitting will be great.
I’ve started knitting with 2 of the yarns and its turning out really well, not at all difficult to knit with AND it doesn’t look any different knitted up.
