Have any of you made this sort of substitute? A felted pattern calls for knitting 2 strands of worsted wt together but instead you knit 1 strand of bulky wt. Do you get comparable results??
Most likely… You’d want to swatch. And it really depends on what kind of pattern.
A swatch is the only way to tell for sure, but the problem with felting is that different yarns felt differently. Also it can vary from knitter to knitter. If you knit too tightly it won’t felt as easy, loose and it’ll felt more. I haven’t tested this, but they always say to use large needles regardless of yarn weight.
In the end…It may be a slightly bigger or smaller, but if it’s a bag does it really matter if it’s a little different? If it’s something like a hat or slippers you will have to watch the felting process closely so you can remove them when they are right.
It’s a bag for someone, I hope. I’m using bulky yarn instead of double worsted because I have it on hand. Stash busting, you see. By my calculations I have just enough, so I’m not swatching it. If it come out smaller than what I have in mind I might just make another other the correct way. It’s going to be cute regardless of the size.
If exact size isn’t important, I’d go ahead with it. I’ve
done it myself with good results.
