Ok, so all the felting projects I have been looking at alwasy has them in stockinette. Any particular reason for this? :??
Also, could it be done in garter stitch?

Garter stitch works just fine and makes the item a little thicker after felting. Mary
Felted stockinette is going to give you the smoothest felted fabric. However, if you want texture, try other stitches. I use a slip stitch for my Boxy Bag pattern and really like the effect.
