I knitted a cozy for my cell phone this week, which turned out way too short for my cell, anyway; but the strap’s buttonhole felted shut on it. How would I prevent that from happening on a future attempt? :??
Felted cell cozy-my buttonhole felted shut
not sure this is right, but it works for me… periodiclly while felting I take the bag out and wiggle a knitting needle in the holes or the areas I don’t want to felt up… that works to some extent. It’ll still felt up a bit, but it keeps it open.
You can cut felt just like fabric so maybe you can salvage this one, too.
Thanks for the tips, ladies!
Jan, mainly I wanted to know how to correct the situation on future projects, as the closed buttonhole isn’t the only flaw in this cozy. It ended up way too short for my cell phone, though the width and snugness of it was good. I’ll have to do some adjustments if I decide to attempt the felt pattern cozy again.
Meanwhile, I knit one in Sugar’n’Cream cotton (lime green) from the pattern in the Stitch’n’Bitch book, and it turned out great. I did have to go down a few sizes in needles from what the pattern called for, as well as adjust the length of it to fit my cell phone.
Someday, I’ll figure out how to post pictures. Meanwhile, I will probably need another computer first, as mine appears to be very, very ill :verysad: (I’m on my ds’s at the moment).
I haven’t tried this, but I’ve read that you can thread a length of cotton yarn through any holes in a pre-felted project to make sure they don’t felt shut. Makes sense to me.
Thanks, Julie. It’s worth a try!
I made a buttonhole on my iPod cozy post-felting by just cutting it with an Exacto knife. There’s been no unraveling or deforming, and I use it constantly.
I poked the point of my scissors through the spot where the hole was supposed to be, and it easily poked through. As I said earlier, the cozy was too small for my cell phone, but another flaw it had was that the strap felted really weird. In places, it seems sort of flat like a strap, and other places, it just feels like a thick “rope”.
In one of my cruisings for a pattern, their suggestion was to check for size AND to pull apart any button holes that might have felted in the process…
Thanks for all the great tips!
