Fbre questions for cold feet!

Any suggestions for a very warm slipper?

I have excruciatingly cold feet! (in fact, I had the doctor check them out)

And the Ottawa cold weather isn’t even here yet!

What fibre do you reccommend for slippers?

I have been wearing some terry cloth ones with rubber soles and they make my feet colder! ( I don’t think they breathe well).

My chilly tootsies thank you.

Lots of people use wool, but alpaca is supposed to be warmer and stronger than wool so it might be a good candidate for something that’s extra warm that’s also bound to get a lot of wear. Were you planning something felted?

I can’t think of a warmer fiber than Alpaca. Although it can be difficult to work with and I’m not sure it would lend itself at all to slippers.

Maybe an Alpaca/Wool blend.

angora bunny fur is amazing too…but also not sure it lends itself well to slippers. i would say that you would be well served by making sure you put a leather sole on them or something like that to help with wear.

I love my felted clogs. They are nice and toasty. Maybe some wool or alpaca socks with them?

Honestly, I would forgo the knit slippers and buy some uggs or ugg-like shearling slippers. Preferably ones that are more of a booties style. You might also look into a down-filled bootie slipper. Sierra Trading Post has some nice ones on their website on clearance.

Me too, i’m thinking of knitting cosy slippers and adding those fleece thermal insoles or sewing insoles made of thermalite.
Dee:)

I made Fuzzy Feet and they are great! I wear them around the house, over my regular socks!

I thinking this pattern: three strand slippers

I was patting some Paton’s alpaca, and it felt yummy. Any yarn reccomendations for this pattern? Maybe one alpaca and then some synthetic for strength? or intarisia soles?

As to felting, I feel funny about deliberately shrinking something… I don’t think I ready yet. I am still mourning an aran cardigan that shrank years ago, and I didn’t even make it!

My felted wool slippers are really warm, but there is a new pattern from Pick up STicks for felted alpaca/boots that look fantastically warm!

I suggest a Suri Dreams/wool combo. I made a cawl with Suri Dreams and Patons Classic Merino and it is soooooooooooo soft. It’s almost like angora.

I cannot recommend more highly the Fiber Trends Felted Clogs. I have made 37 pair in 2 years for DH & I, family & friends and EVERYONE loves them! If you want them even warmer than they would be in plain wool, use Cascade Pastaza… a wool/llama blend… Fuzzy, soft and VERY VERY warm!! Plus, the pattern is BRILLIANT and fun to knit.

There’s a thread in the knit-along forum here that will tell you all you would ever need to know…

Why not just knit some warm socks and wear them with Uggs or other pile slippers?

here’s the link to the insole: http://www.craftandfabriclinks.com/shoe_inserts/shoe_insert_pattern.html

I’m wearing these right now, and they’re super-warm. They’re rather large, and I really dislike the colorway (it was the only one on sale…yes I am a cheapskate), but you can’t beat them for warmth. They’re a super-quick knit, too.

I just recently heard of this. Have never used it myself, but heard it felt wonderful.

Yes, Bison (buffalo) yarn. Supposedly much warmer than wool. Much more expensive too — $48/skein. -j
