FAVORITE NOTIONS

I’ve searched for ‘favorite notions’ and the nearest was something under ‘tools of the trade’ but that seems to have been last posted upon in 2006. So here’s a ‘nothing new under the sun’ topic, and forgive me if it’s long since covered elsewhere!

I’m prompted to reopen what must be a long-time general interest, by a discovery that has changed my knitting life. Huge claim, I know, but huge change!
I’ve long gone on about tying an elastic band onto a cable to stop stitches slipping down and consequently, on a big project, loading the weight in an unhelpful way. It works, but is a bit fiddlesome - you have to undo the tight elastic each time you change knitting direction, and that’s a bit of a nuisance, though still worth it in my opinion.
However! I’ve now discovered these, on TwiceShearedSheep. Doubtless others have already found them, but just in case anyone hasn’t, have a look at this, and don’t be put off by the seemingly ENORMOUS price tag - I can’t get the site to change from Hong Kong dollars (my currency) to US dollars. So they are roughly US $7 for a pack of four. I don’t think it’s necessary to worry about size too much, if you buy the large size it’ll go over a large needle, but once you’ve slid it onto the cable any size will do; likewise, a ‘small’ will work if you put it on the cable before attaching the needles. They are great!

Yup! I love 'em! Got a pair in one of Twice Sheared Sheep’s Advent boxes (highly recommend, so many nifty goodies!), and use them regularly.

You can, however, get them much more cheaply if you look for “lanyard adjusters”, used for lanyard-type i.d. holders. They may only come in black, but they work the same.

Never thought of lanyard holders, ColoCro, what a good idea!

I much prefer the little metal bulb shaped stitch markers to any others (for finer needles, at least). I find the plastic locking ones are less durable and don’t always fit if you need to mark a stitch.
Also the little digital row counters with plastic finger straps.

These aren’t stitch markers, Shintoga - these sort of grip on to the cable and you can shove them up to keep your knitting stacked up so that it doesn’t slip and slide down along your cable and thereby drag on the live stitches you are working on. It honestly does make such a difference, especially as you get to the end of say a large shawl, where the bulk of the already knitted work drags on what you are doing. I used, as I said, to use a tied elastic band (I cut it, and then just knotted it on the cable where it stuck) but they are a pain to pull apart when you need to move them to the other end. With these you just press the little stopper button and slide it along and let go of the button so it grips again. Truly wonderful!

Ah, maybe I misunderstood - I thought the topic was about things you’ve found that you enjoy using in general. I rarely use cables!

@Lalla and @ColoCro do these look like the same thing? I am adding some to my letter to santa.

(Sorry about the ugly long link, it’s just amazon)

Lalla I’ve been using your elastic band trip ever since you posted it about a year or more back, thanks its been a great help.

ColoCro, I knew you had nice cable clamps. Your tip about the lanyard clasp is a good one for buying on a budget. The coloured pack I’ve seen is 50 pieces, I won’t need that many! But if what I’ve found is the right thing i can look for a smaller pack.

Thank you both for great tips. I love this forum!

They sure look like the same thing! My only question would be about size. As long as they’ll tighten down on the cord, you could put them on before the needles, if the needles are too large to go through. Assuming you use interchangeables.

Thank you!

Sorry, Shintoga, if I got off my own topic!! Actually, I live such a sheltered life that I can’t imagine knitting other than with cables! So I assumed, obviously completely wrongly, that cables were pretty much ‘general’; either way, I guess I’m just interested in favorite notions generally - there are so many gadget-y things out there. To be perhaps more general one of my very favorite ‘must haves’ in any kit is a nail file/emery board. I find the slightest snag on a nail can catch so easily that if you are out and about without a nail file you’re sunk!

Yes, Creations, those look exactly the same; 50 pieces does seem a lot, and I guess once the toggle is on the cable you’re not going to lose it and need a replacement too often!! I guess size-wise it only really matters if they are so big they become annoying hanging around there on the cable, but with a lot of knitting stacked up I don’t think they’d get in the way even if they were quite large; the ‘large’ size at twiceshearedsheep is probably pretty much the same and that’s what I’m using at the moment; it doesn’t bother me at all.

My favorite notion has to be my ergonomic crochet hook—it makes long sessions so much more comfortable.
