Fairisle made up plain

The wool is on sale! so my son wants me to make this pattern

He wants it to be plain with no pattern(teenager). each ball is 50g 121yds if I bought the Karimsa Superwash it calls for but I am buying Patons classic wool merino 20sts and 26R=4". Each of these balls are 100g 223yds. I am making finished size 45 5/8" How many balls do I need? If I am not using the other colors how do I know how many balls to buy?

The total of all the colors in the Large adds up to 800 grams of the Karisma, which comes to 1936 yards, but I’m sure some of those are just partial balls from some of the accent colors. Divided into the 223 yards per skein of Classic Wool that comes to 8.68 skeins, but to be on the safe side, I think I’d get 10 skeins.

Is he going to be able to take care of a sweater out of Classic Wool since is not superwash, or do you do his laundry?

I am afraid to say yes, but yes, I still do his laundry. I have always been afraid to wash anything I knit in the washing machine. I have always hand washed it and laid it flat to dry. Patons classic wool has 20sts=4" does superwash come in that size? Is superwash 100% wool. I thought that the agition of the machine made the sweater go more fuzzy or ball more. I know I am fussy and I have only made sweaters in 100% wool or acrylic so I am not experienced enough when it comes to knowing my yarns. Thanks for figuring out the 10 balls that helps.

Superwash wool is 100% wool, but has been treated to get rid of the fuzzy little hairs that make it felt. It’s usually smoother and softer than regular wool, too.

Great! So now I am off to find superwash because I think he will like the smooth look.

I just phoned my local yarn store and she has never heard of superwash. What brand is it, Patons, Bernat etc. Does it come in different tensions. My pattern is calling for 21sts x 28 rows on 4mm(US6).

They never heard of superwash? :??

Lamb’s Pride has a superwash, the yarn in the pattern you posted is superwash.

Debbie Bliss Merino Aran is a superwash.

Those are off the top of my head. A www.yarndex.com search could find more, I’m sure.

Since you need so much, try looking at www.discountyarnsale.com , too.

I just looked there myself to check my link and found this. I have some of this, and it’s very soft.

You know I am from Canada Yeah! So I guess we don’t have it here. Maybe in Toronto or some bigger city but not where I live. I phoned all the shops near me and none of them have any. This is one of the reasons I get frustrated. I am so limited with yarn. I will make out of the patons classic and he will wear a t-shirt under it.

Mission Falls is a nice (Canadian-made)superwash wool, mine says 18 sts/4 inches/10 cm on US size 8, 50 gr is 85 yds/78 m, but you might be able to get closer to the the gauge using the US size 6 needles like the pattern calls for. Not as cheap as the Paton’s Classic Wool though.

I would just ask the knitting shops if they have any worsted weight machine-washable wool. Are they close enough to you that you can go feel it in person before you buy it?

Thanks, I will go ask them again because when I asked they said they did not have superwash.

They may not know it by that name, so yeah, ask about washable wool. Although they may not have heard of that either… <chuckle>

Thanks, you made me laugh.

Phone or email Yarn Forward in Toronto, or go to their site, www.yfwd.com

They are well-stocked, very helpful and they WILL know what Superwash is!

That’s where I got the Cleckheaton superwash. I remember now, because customs made a stink about getting the yarn here from Canada!

That link doesn’t work. It’s http://www.yarnforward.com/

That is a great site! thanks
