Fair Isle

 I just got all my yarns from Knit Picks to make those beautiful socks that are on the cover of their current issueā€¦the ā€œTulip and Ginghamā€ ones.

I have a question :?? ā€¦when I work from a colored pattern and on a purling row do I read the chart from LEFT to right???

Do you mark it somehow so you remember? I think Iā€™d have to do that somehow or I know Iā€™ll ā€œforgetā€. Thanks so much! :XX: :XX:

Yup!

I tend to make a photocopy for me, and then write the row number on the side of the row that I start from - so if the first row was a knit row, and thatā€™s number one, and Iā€™m reading the chart from right to left, the little number (1) goes on the right side of the chart! Then, the purl rows or WS rows will get even numbers 2,4,6 and so on written on the lefthand side. As I go, I know that Iā€™m always starting from the numbered side of the chart.

I usually use post it notes to block off everything above the row Iā€™m working on. Helps to keep track.

You donā€™t need to do that if youā€™re working in the round though, do you (read it right to left then left to right?). I have a hat planned for the near future that will be my first Fair Isle attempt.

In the round, you always read right to left.

Thanks Ingrid! I thought so, but thought it best to double check.

Those are incredible socksā€“make sure you share pictures!
