I was thinking of knitting a fair isle sweater in say cascade 220 tweed and picking up colors in the tweed for the secondary colors. Has anyone done this or would this work? I thought it might be okay
For my Fair Isle sweaters, I use Jamieson and Smith 2-ply jumper weight. It’s not really that soft, but the colours are GREAT
I use the J & S wool, too. I get weak in the knees when I look at the colors.
You can knit Fair Isle with worsted, though. It’ll be a really warm sweater.
So, maybe DK weight would be best? How about combining the tweed as the main color and solid colors added with? Someone told me this wouldn’t work–jsut wondering. By the way, I haven’t seen J&S–is there somewhere online that is a good place to get it?
www.schoolhousepress.com is where I’ve gotten mine. It’s a fingering weight wool, made for traditional Fair Isle sweaters. Several books that I have use it.
I’ve also made Fair Isles out of dk and I love them. I wanted to make a pattern that called for the fingering weight and I just made a smaller size. Much to my amazement, it fits.
I don’t see why using the colors of the tweed as accents wouldn’t be a good idea. I like it, actually.
Thanks! This is a project for the winter, jsut have to be thinking a few projects ahead :teehee:
