Fair isle knitting is too tight

I tried, but my fair isle is too tight.
Has anyone ever cut the strands and added to each one to loosen the stitches and get rid of the puckering? I am making a Christmas stocking and will insert a lining so the backside of the knitting will be protected.
Any ideas? I do NOT want to unknit, it has taken me years to get this far.

I think the whole thing would unravel. If it’s wool you can try blocking it, but that may not work. When you do fair isle you have to make sure the floats are a little loose. It really just takes practice.
