Fair Isle for summer shirt?

I’d like to knit this top in a fair isle design. http://knitandtonic.typepad.com/photos/fosthe_winners/shortsnortfront.html

Would it look silly? I’m thinking of doing a cream background with rose, soft pink, grey blue, light green, slightly darker green, etc. pallette. Or it might work better in a bright yellow, loud color combinations. I havent decided.

I’m not real sure about the design either. I know I won’t be putting snowflakes or reindeer on it! HA!

And is Fairisle hard to do in the round? As far as lining it up etc?

I think the biggest obstacle for you is that you can’t really use cotton yarns when doing fair isle. (Well, I suppose you can, but the results will be iffy.) With fair isle, you need the stretch in wool to help you carry the yarn in the back without it being too tight or too loose. If you use cotton, you will have to overcompensate for cotton’s lack of stretch, and you will have lots of loose yarn floats that will get snagged and look unsightly.

Also, fair isle is very dense and heavy. It makes fabric twice as thick, not something you generally want in a summer top.

Sorry to rain on your parade! You could probably get away with a small amount of fair isle, say, one band around the hem.

I agree–Fair Isle is double thick, but a band or edging would look nice.

As for in the round, though, that’s the best way to do it! It’s so much easier to follow the pattern when you can look at it from the front at all times.

I’ve not found a cotton I’m pleased with and considered doing this top in Caron Simply Soft. Great idea Ingrid! I’m thinking about a band of waves at the bottom. And maybe a seagull or two, here and there. I guess I’ll just have to do a swatch and see where it takes me.

Have you seen the other toddler tank pattern posted? See: http://www.knittinghelp.com/knitting/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12442&highlight= After you finish the Short Snort Tank, you have another pattern waiting for you! :happydance:

Can’t wait to see your Short Snort Tank! You’ll be done WAY before me because I can’t start until I’m done with another toddler pattern.

Hey Jackie! HA! Another cute cute pattern!

What are you currently knitting? Because I’m sure I MUST make it as well! HA!

Well I decided I’ve got some of the Sugar N Cream in Butter Cream so I’m going to make these shirts (at least one) as a stash buster. Heres the Quickie Baby Sweater Eecuzzacrea made out of the same color.

Sorry I dont know how to do the neat hyperlink on this forum. :frowning:

I think the color will give it an earthy sweet look. I still want to do fairisle, but well . . .

We will see. You may finish before me! I only have a size six with a 24 inch circ, the Snort (Dear Lord that is an awlful name) Tank calls for a 16 inch circ. I have a little plum colored raglan sweater to keep me occupied till my new cirs (which I have not even yet ordered) come in.

Hee hee :roflhard: Well… Three things, actually:

  1. Picovoli in KP Shine on US 4 cir
  2. Sunset Pullover in KP Vacation on US 10/10.5 cir
  3. Reid (toddler cardigan) in Lily Sugar’n’Cream (Rosewood) on US 4/5

I can’t believe that I’m working on three projects  – it’s the most I’ve ever worked on at one time. The first two projects are for me, and the lace cardigan is for my daughter. Funny that you should mention Lily Sugar’n’Cream! It’s not as soft as other cottons, but I love the colorways available. The brown, white, and pink colors of Rosewood look like Neopolitan ice cream. The more I work on it, the more I think that this cardigan could be a beach coverup. The lace pattern could also easily be made into a simple beach bag to match.

Anyway, I’ve got to finish something before starting something new. I’ve only finished the back of the Reid cardigan, so it’ll be a while before I begin the Short Snort Tank. After the Short Snort Tank, I plan to do the Kidlet tank or one that I create. I’ve got a stash of cotton yarn waiting for more tanks!

Shame on you, raising the bar like that. :stuck_out_tongue: I  Reid! I can’t wait to see it.

Ok your right. I’ll probably finish Snort first. But I don’t think I’ll have anything nearly as beautiful as Reid this year.
