Explain an Aran cable instruction please

Hi there

Can someone please explain what Cr.4F.K is done. The explanation says:

Cross 3 st at front, so next 3 sts on cable needle and leave at front of work, P1 then K3 from the cable needle.
What does “cross 3 sts mean?”

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum!
The directions go on to explain that Cross 3 sts at front means to slip the next 3sts on the left needle to a cable needle and let that cable needle hang to the front of the work. That will give you a cable crossing up and to the left.

Cross 3 st at front: so next 3 sts on cable needle and leave at front of work, P1 then K3 from the cable needle.”

Thank you so much for your prompt reply but it doesn’t say “so next 3 sts…” it says “sl” ie slip.

If it were just to "slip 3 sts onto cable needle and place at front of work - would that not just be a C3F ie a Cable 3 Forward?

Yes, slip 3sts to cable needle. It’s not a classic C3F because that’s usually defined as
slip 3 to cn, hold in front, k3, k3 from cn.
Your pattern calls for slip 3 to cn, hold in front, p1, k3 from cn.

Thanks a million. I’ve done that now and it looks good!
