Enlarge a pattern

How can I enlarge this cowl?

Thank you in advance.

Jill

It seems to be a multiple of 3 (someone will correct that if it’s wrong) so just cast on additional stitches in multiples of 3 to get the diameter you want.

Multiple of three seems right to me, too.

Thank you ladies. Can you please explain how you figure that out? Relatively new to knitting and still have a lot to learn.

Jill

You know, to me it looks like a multiple of 2 + 1 for a cast on of 69sts. Rows 5 and 7 are the only ones that figure in this and they each have a k1 and then the repeat.
It is gorgeous for such a simple pattern.

Uh, no, because now I look again and I think it’s a multiple of 2 + 1. Each decrease uses 2 sts and the yo adds one back to the count. I’m looking at the part that repeats. My revised thinking is that you’ll add sts in multiples of 2. I guess I thought the k1 was part of the repeat. Now that I realize it’s only at the beginning or end of a round, I’m wondering why it’s there.

Okay. So you’re saying you check the rows that make the pattern and count the number of stitches it takes to actually make the pattern? But if it’s 2+1, what about row7? Wouldn’t that be 4?i’m confused. Sorry ladies. I guess I just don’t understand.

Sorry for the confusion. To check the multiple, look at the repeat in the pattern, in this case the instructions between the asterisks. It takes two sts to do the repeat in both round 5 and row 7.
Rnd 5: K1, *yo, k2tog; rep from * around
Rnd 7: *SSK, yo; rep from * around, end k1
The yo doesn’t use a stitch but the k2tog requires 2sts as does the SSK. So in rounds 5 and 7 you are always using 2 sts in the repeats. Because of the yo you keep the total stitch count the same because it adds a stitch to make up for the k2tog or ssk decrease. The yo doesn’t factor into the multple here though.
So increase the pattern in multiples of 2 and add one to the total for the extra k1.
