English instructions

Hi. I have a pattern for a baby dress that calls for yon = yarn on needle and yrn = yarn round needle. I found that yrn is a yarn over but what is a yarn on needle? The pattern show both stitches in the same row. Like - p1, yon, kb1, sl 1, k2 tog, psso, kb1, yrn, p1, p2 tog and so on. Please help. Thanks so much!

Welcome to KH.

From the Glossary tab at the top of the page. I thought that’s what it meant but I double checked.

yon yarn over needle. Same as yo

Yon and yrn needle are British and are more a how-to-do-it than a yo instruction which tells you what you need and leaves you to figure out how to get there. HTH and be sure to ask about anything else you find confusing.

Just to get it right-yon and yrn are both a yarn over? On the abbreviations on the 1st page yon is stated as “yarn on needle”. Since they are both on the same row, do I just yarn over for both? Actually, it’s stated as a Dec row. The row is - k1, *p1, p2 tog, p1, yon, kb1, sl 1, k2 tog, psso, kb1, yrn, p1, p2 tog, p1, k1, rep from * to end. Sorry, I’ve ripped out so many times on other patterns, I don’t want to go through that again. Thanks

What pattern are you making? Can you link to it? or give us its name and where you found it? Even a picture of the finished project can sometimes be helpful.

I understand about ripping. Been there, done that, it’s a universal knitter’s bane.

*p1, p2 tog, p1, yon, kb1, sl 1, k2 tog, psso, kb1, yrn, p1, p2 tog, p1, k1

p1 =1 st on your right needle
p2 tog = 1
p1 = 1
yon = 1
kb1 = 1
sl1, k2 tog, psso (double decrease) = 1
kb1 = 1
yrn = 1
p1 = 1
p2 tog = 1
p1 =1
k1 =1

If I listed it out and counted correctly (if not, someone will catch it!) you will have 12 sts per repeat for your next row. How many sts in your repeat at the beginning of this row?

As GG mentioned both yon and yrn are yarn overs. British patterns are just more precise about how to move the yarn between knit and purl sts.
For the first case, the yon is after a purl stitch so you should bring the yarn over the needle to the back to make the knit stitch. In the second case, you’ve just knit a stitch and now you want to bring the yarn to the front between the needles, then back over and around the right needle to the front again to purl the next stitch. Both kinds of yarn overs will give you a loop over the needle.

k1, *p1, p2 tog, p1, yon, kb1, sl 1, k2 tog, psso, kb1, yrn, p1, p2 tog, p1, k1, rep from * to end.

This row will decrease 2sts per repeat.

Thanks to you both so much for the detailed instructions. I found the pattern on etsy. I had to buy it and there is no name on the pattern I printed out. For some reason lately I’ve found English baby patterns really cute, unfortunately the instructions are very different from the ones I’m used to. I haven’t started the litte jacket yet. I wanted to make sure I knew how to knit it before I ran into problems 1/2 way through. I’m sure I’ll yell for help once I start it or the other 2 I printed out. Thanks so much again.
