Empty space in pattern instructions

Hi everyone! I want to knit a scarf but the pattern puzzles me. After an initial increase from 3 sts to a total of 13 sts I’m to go to a pattern chart where row 1 first shows 3 boxes with knit-purl-knit. After that there is a gap of the equivalent of 5 boxes, then there is a pattern bit, followed by the empty space again, and 3 boxes at the end. What do I do with the gap? And the end bits? Row 1 has 15 sts total, the middle bit only 9… I don’t get it…

This is my first post here so I’m not allowed to post a link, but the pattern is called Juno Regina, and can be found on Knitty.

Grateful for help

There are no sts in the empty spaces. Chart1 uses 13 sts (to check that number, count the k2tog as 2 and don’t count the yo). Work the chart over the 13sts that you have. Later as the number of sts increases on later rows, the spaces will be filled in with the instructions in the chart boxes.

The first 3 and last 3 boxes plus the 9 in the middle will fit your 15 sts.
