If my pattern’s gauge is:
Gauge: 4 stitches and 6 rows equal 1 inch
and the instructions are to cast on 32, then work in garter stitch; in making my swatch, do I count my cast on row as the first of the 6 rows referred to in the gauge? :??

I always do my swatches at least 4"x4", so your gauge of 4 stitches and 6 rows = 1" would translate into 16st and 24rows = 4". Do that, then measure from the top of your needle to the bottom of your work, and from side to side and it should be close to 4x4. If not you may need to change needle size if your gauge is consistently off.
Good luck!
Okay, that makes sense.
Thanks so much for your quick response. I was sitting here with my needles in hand, waiting to go forward.
