Edited title -Help with circular needles

Hello.
This is my first time here.
I am not an experienced knitter.
I have only done the knit stitch and am now trying out the purl.
Can you knit and purl on circular needles.
EX: Straight shawl
2 rows knit
2 rows purl.

I would appreciate your help and look forward to getting to know people here. Thanks

I just realized you’re not asking about ribbing. The answer is yes, you can knit and purl on circular needles either flat or in the round. If you knit a row, purl a row flat it becomes stockinette. If you do that in the round it becomes garter stitch.
