Easy Shrug?

I want try making my first garment, I think. I’m not ready for socks, or a full on sweater…But I am SOOOOO tired of scarves already. I’ve only done three (two I’m still in the process of finishing). I want to make a simple dressy, short sleeved shrug. I know it will be a tough thing to make, but I actually have plenty of help should I stumble through it (yay for many knitting mentors – a local knitting store always has TONS of women there sitting on the couches, helping people out, it’s so cute. . .).

What do you think?? Does anyone know of an easy, starter pattern?

Am I crazy? Lol. . .

PS: I don’t want anything that buttons in front. Just something that wraps around my shoulders, if that makes sense. If not, I have plenty of pictures of things that are giving me inspiration.

The simplest of all is to make a rectangle long enough to stretch from wrist to wrist and sew up each end about 15 inches. The next simplest would be the same idea, but CO about the same diameter as your wrist for a cuff, inc for a sleeve, knit straight for the part across your back and dec for the other sleeve and cuff. There should be a ton of patterns at knittingpatterncentral.com to look at.

I am sort of in the same boat. I’m going to make this dream in color shrug soon. It’s pretty and fairly easy. A lot of shrug patterns I have seen have buttons, but you wouldn’t have to put them on. This anthropologie inspired shrug has short sleeves and sort of “fits the bill”.

There aren’t a many as I had hoped there. Does anyone know where I can find a pattern that is done in this manner? I don’t need anything fancy, like leaves, or anything, a I still have some problems making patterns like this pretty. lol. . .

Nevermind, I think I found one!

I am also a fairly new knitter. I went to my sweater class today and bought a really cool pattern. It is designed by a local artist and it’s called "One Skein Wonder. It’s really neat and my instructor told me I can definitely do this. Her website is www.glampyreknits.com. I haven’t been on the site, but I’m assuming there will be a picture of it and maybe you can order the pattern. The girl in the picture is modeling a very small shrug in blue, if that helps.

Yes it’s on the site, she also has some free patterns too. The minisweater/boobholder is a favorite one.

Thank You For The Link!

This one is pretty easy if you know how to pick up stitches. Takes more yarn than they say, though.

Yep, I found it! It’s only $5 for the pattern. Could you tell me whether or not the pattern involves making sleeves separately, or the rectangular technique? I don’t want to buy it if I have to deal with shaping sleeves just yet. I want something very simple.

It’s made in what’s called a top down raglan style which is knit in one piece. You start at the neck, do increases on every other row, part of the sts become the sleeves. It’s really not all that hard.

wonderful. I’ll look into buying that pattern than. It’s really cute!

Glad you got your answer. I was just fixing to respond. I’m really excited about making this. My instructor made the border a little bit bigger to cover a little more of her chest (she’s a little bit bigger than the model) and it turned out soo cute. My daughter even likes it - now I just have to find the yarn that she likes so I can make it for her. Good luck!
