duplicate stitch or cross stitch, instead of freehand embroidery?

ok, not being a multi-crafter, i’m a bit miffed with this new design i saw, even though at first it seemed so ‘right’… turns out it has freehand embroidery, which is a deal-breaker. i’m thinking of switching it to duplicate stitch, or more likely, cross stitch using stockinette as the ‘evenweave’ background, and having one darker color for outlining and one coordinating variegated for the main color sections. has anyone done that or something similar? any advice, tips, tricks? anybody incorporate interfacing or backing (cutwaway, no-show, tearaway, heavy cap, etc)? thanks! cheers, 'topher  Ravelry: Butterfly Mitts pattern by Jenny Williams

Hi X! I’m not much of an embroiderer either. You could do duplicate stitch but I don’t think you’ll get that same smooth finish inside the outline. It’s called satin stitch. A washable backing might help stabilize so that’s a good idea.
It’s a good looking design.
