Hi all! I am brand new to knitting and doing my first project - a scarf. I am unsure of the technical terms but I believe I may have dropped a stitch, and I believe I’m knitting garter stitch? However I cannot see a ‘loop’ like videos/photos online show in order to fix it - does anyone have any advice on how to solve this sort of run in the knitting? Thank you!!
Nice rainbow yarn!
It’s most likely this loop I highlighted and pointed to:
If you have a stitch marker or safety pin you can put it though the loop so it doesn’t run down more whilst you prepare yourself for working the ladder back up.
Ideally you need stoppers on your needles before trying to work this so more stitches don’t fall off, if you don’t have stoppers you can use a thin elastic band and kept wrapping it around and around until its firm, one on each needle.
Do you have a crochet hook? It doesn’t have to be the same size as your needle but preferably not bigger. If you don’t have a crochet hook I suggest buying one as they are super handy to fix knitting.
You said you have watched videos how to work the ladder back up so you probably have one to watch on slow motion whilst you work this.
As it’s garter stitch it is worked by knitting on both sides of the fabric, but this produces (looking from one side only) a knit row a purl row a knit row a purl row… personally I would keep turning the work so that you re-work it as a knit, turn, work it as a knit, turn and so on all the way up. That’s the way I found easiest when I started rather than trying to switch between knit and purl for the ladder.
One other thing I’ll mention, your yarn tail is very short, ideally you would stop knitting earlier than this and join in a new ball to continue, leaving a 10cm to 15 cm tail to weave in later. It’s best not to try to knot the new yarn onto the tail as knots can work loose when laundered.
Hope this helps, let us know if it makes no sense and you need more help, or post a pic and show off your fixed ladder of you are successful. Good luck.
This can be a little intimidating the first time you do it but well the effort to learn the skill.
Beautiful yarn
Definitely get a couple of crochet hooks in different sizes for these situations! There are even double-ended crochet hooks which are brilliant for fixing garter stitch, as you can pull the loops through in alternate directions. But assuming you don’t have one of those, what @Creations said.
