I came across a pattern that uses yarn overs. It also lists instructions for one row as follows…Knit one…drop yarn over…my question is How to drop a yarn over.

You would just slip it off your left needle and let it fall, I would assume.
If indeed you are familiar with what a yarn over looks like, when you come to it, just let it fall off of the needle.
