If a pattern calls for 3dpn + working needle, can you change it to 4dpn+ working needle without causing any issues in the pattern. I want to start another pair of socks and pattern calls for the 3+1 but my first pair I did was 4+1 and I was quite comfortable with it.
DPN question
There’s two answers.
-
It doesn’t matter in terms of the result. You can get identical socks from 4 or 5 DPNs, one circular as magic loop, two circulars, etc. etc.

It does matter in terms of following the instructions. A pattern written for four needles will refer to needles 1, 2 and 3. Your stitches will be divided over four needles, so you will have to “rewrite” the pattern to accommodate that.
Which pattern are you wanting to try? It might be easy to adapt.
Another way to work the 3-needle pattern with 4 needles is to use stitch markers to mark off the number of sts that would be on the 3 needles.
It’s bernat basic knit sock. It’s on ravelry but originally published in yarnspiration. Don’t know how to post a link. But at top of page on yarnspiration it has a number BRK0128-003926M. Don’t know what that means, I’m assuming an identifier.
If this is the pattern, take care.
We’ve just been discussing the errors in the pattern.
Oh dear. I actually have been thinking of doing a sock with texture. I have already picked out some yarn I really like. And have printed off several different patterns I might try… the hermione everyday socks or the Austin socks by Kay Litton. With the first, directions for 2 circulars but I’ll use dpn (I think I can do that). The second just states needle size so assuming I can use what I want. I’m trying to expand my horizons and I do like the look of the texture so…
Yes the bernat pattern number matches.
Heel note now K15, etc. with my mark in red.
Looks like the pattern has been revised to k15 for needle 1 on the heel setup.
Bernat has released a version with corrections.

You are so kind for following up on that. Already printed new copy and in my “future project” folder. Also, I know you respond to so many people, so you might not remember, but through your advice I was able to obtain the pattern for child’s “zigzag” dress. The yarn has come in so after I finish another project, I plan to work on this. Thanks for all your assistance, you go above and beyond for all!!!
Kay’s patterns are written very well. You should have no problem.
Thanks. I actually did my first pair using her pattern and the tutorial that went with it. She made it a very easy project. So now I’m on a new pair with totally different type yarn and on my own ( no tutorial) and I’m having no issues.
