Gah! I am trying to make these Easter Eggs and I’m struggling with the DPNs. I can use them just fine to finish a hat, but starting the row is insane. The needles get all goofy and then I can’t tell which one goes where! The only DPNs I have are metal or plastic. Would it help if they were bamboo?
DPN Hellllllllp!
I prefer bamboo because they don’t slide off. Several people said that if you rest the needles on a table to get you started in the first few rows it makes it easier to control them.
I’m going to Joanns today so I’ll look for some bamboo needles. I’ll aslo try laying them on a table. Thanks Ingrid.
I like to knit the first row flat. That way there’s more “meat” on the needles to try and keep it from twisting up on you.
Another good idea! Thanks!

I struggled trying to knit socks on aluminum DPNs. I got so frustrated. Then someone from this forum suggested the bamboo, and it was the best investment I made. I love using my DPNs now. I cant wait to start another project using them.
That’s good to know, Tammy! Thanks!
When I am starting with my DPN I split evenly between 2 needles
then it is obvious which is the right needle to knit on first, the counting is a bit different and you need to be on top of that, but you can split it correctly after 2 rows, and then continue as Normal
If the second row has increases or decreases then you will have to count them out (like K2 Inc for the start of a ball) and the Numbers might be odd until you split it back out to 3 needles
that helps me not twist things

Jan–
For the first 3 or so rows on dpns, I swing the cast on edge to the inside on all three needles. I find that helps me not twist my cast on row or the first few till my pattern is established.

Problem solved. I am using bamboo dpn’s and knitting one row straight and then joining. It makes no difference for this project and is helping me get used to them. :happydance:
