DPN confusion

Does anyone have an easy way to keep track of where each of the 3 DPN’s I’m using are to lie while knitting? I keep getting the tube twisted, which leads me to believe that I’ve got the needles in the wrong place, right? Do I ever have to move around the working yarn (from front to back of needles)? I’m just practicing right now and I’m doing the k2p2.

Also, is the finished work supposed to be coming towards me or going away from me as I work?

Any assistance would be great! Thanks!

It may help to start out with your stitches on only 2 needles. Fold so the needles are parallel === and use the 3rd needle to knit with. After a couple inches, you can add the 4th needle and rearrange your stitches. You’re always only knitting on 2 needles at a time, with the points closest to you; the other ones hang off the back just holding your stitches until you get to them. I wouldn’t worry for now whether the finished work points toward you or away from you - it takes a few inches for it to look like anything anyway. What’s important is how the needles face. Here’s a picture of circular knitting http://www.knitpicks.com/content/wp-content/uploads/2007/05/circular4.jpg even though it’s on a circ needle, the knitting is the same as on dpns.

[COLOR=DarkOrchid][SIZE=3][FONT=Comic Sans MS]The needle with the working yarn attached is always in your right hand. Pick up the empty needle and knit into the first stitch on the needle to the left of the needle with the working yarn attached. Keep going clockwise.

When the knitting you’re knitting onto (empty needle in above description) becomes full and you have an empty needle in your left hand, rotate and knit on the next clockwise needle.

The key is to remember that the needle with the working attached yarn always is in your right hand.
