Why is this site down so often and for so long?
Here at Knitting Help? It’s not down much at all. What troubles are you having?
I’ve never had any problems with this site. When I do have issues, it’s usually because my computer is being stupid. Sometimes just restarting the computer will help.
KH is rarely down. Occasionally we’ll have a small glitch with a database or something that will cause the forum to unavailable, but these are infrequent and usually very brief.
Sheldon, It just happened again when I tried to get into the site from an email with the responses to my question. I opened a new window and tried again and got a 404. I googled it and the only way I got in was to click on a url regarding videos. I am very confused about this.
That is weird. I rarely have it happen. Could it be a setting on your computer?
Jan, I don’t think so. It only happens with this site. I just got a response from you in my email and when I clicked on it, I came directly to this site. But a few minutes ago I got the 404 again. It’s very weird indeed.
You might try clearing out your cookies (this will mean you’ll need to re-enter your login and password for this and other sites which remember you (like Amazon)) and your history and see if that helps.
I have no trouble getting in at all! Could it be the type or virus checker or spam filter you have?
A 404 page isn’t due to the website being down, but rather following a link to a page that doesn’t exist. It sounds like recently a link from an forum email worked one time for you but not the other. The links on the site don’t change. I am guessing that something is causing the links in your email program to not always format correctly. Some email programs attempt to hotlink any links they see in emails, and sometimes they don’t do a very good job of it. The next time you get a 404 page when following a link, try copying and pasting the address that appears in the address bar of the browser into this forum thread for me to see.

In addition to what Sheldon said, if you paste or click a link that doesn’t work, delete the stuff after ‘.com’ in the address bar, and then try that. Links do change and older pages may be renamed, but if you go to the main domain (as in www.knittinghelp.com) you can navigate to other parts of the site.
When you can view the site correctly, go to the forum main page, then bookmark that. Typically, forum main page links don’t get changed and are the best to have your bookmark at.
http://www.knittinghelp.com/ Sheldon this is the url from Google that gives me the 404 … It is at the top of the google list. The one under it, which is a video url brings me to the site. And, you are right about the url’s within an email. Sometimes it works and other times no.

That is what I have bookmarked. I’m not sure if this site has any login info in the url… doesn’t look like it to me, though. See if that works for you.
Thanks. That’s our primary URL which goes to the main page of the website. It shouldn’t ever produce a 404 page. Something on your computer might be rewriting the URLs. There are some viruses and malware that intercept clicks and try to send you to different websites. I can’t say for sure that’s the problem you are experiencing and don’t want to send you into a panic. But I think I can confidently say the problem is likely on your end.
There is no login info in the URL. Logins for the forum are maintained by cookies.
Yeah, that’s what I figured on the login stuff. Some sites will put some info into the url so that when you link to someone else, it’ll not show right. As to the malware suggestion, yeah… don’t freak out… However, DO complete some scans on your computer. You should be scanning (not counting the automatic scans your malware removal program does) your hard drive(s) in their entireties at least once or twice, a week, depending on how often your computer is online. (Not you but your computer. In other words, if you have DSL or cable, where it’s online as long as your computer is on and hooked up with the modem, then, your computer is online a lot.) Yes, this would be the more in-depth scan and you can wait to do this when you go to bed or have to leave the house for a few hours or so. A good in-depth virus scan would be good, too. Usually, when it changes the url, it’s a malware, though… a lot of them do that. I’d tell you what some others do but I don’t want you to freak out. Oh, also… anything that’s myfreewebs or associated with it is malware! That stuff is a pita to remove, too…

Doesn’t it disconnect when you turn off the modem? That’s what we do when we shut down the computer. If it doesn’t have power, it’s not connected.
Yes, if you break the connection to the internet either by turning off the modem, turning off the computer or unplugging an ethernet cord, your computer is offline. Also, the worst possible things as for getting malware and viruses is those newer printers that do pretty much everything… there’s some printers that actually use the internet connection and actually have something that stores a good chunk of memory on. There are viruses and malware written that can affect those. Heck, I have a calculator that has viruses that were written for it. The reason for this? The person or people who wrote the viral codes knew they could spread it either through the internet (you can download stuff for it and transfer that from the computer to the calculator) or via infrared connection (you could transfer info between that and another calculator through infrared). It’s crazy what people come up with, I swear…
