Double pointed or circular needle?

Hey Everyone,

I’m starting a new sock pattern and I don’t know what type of needles to use, double pointed or circular needles… It doesn’t say in the pattern. Here’s how it starts:

Cuff:
Using the German twisted cast on, loosely cast on 60 sts. Join, being careful not to twist the stitches. Place marker to indicate beginning of round.

[knit one round, purl one round] twice. Knit one more round.

What do you suggest?

Double-pointed are traditional for socks, and are what I always use. My favorite sets are five needles that are only about 3" long.

There are methods that use circulars on socks, some of which allow you to knit both socks at once, but someone else will have to tell you about them. Whichever you choose, happy socking!

It’s your preference, any of these are methods for knitting in the round, but it’s what each individual knitter likes. You won’t easily find circulars short enough to knit socks without using either magic loop or 2 circs. There’s videos for all of them on the Advanced Techniques page.
