Double knitting trouble

I’m working on a dish towel done in double knitting. I’m having great difficulty maintaining an even tension. The section I’ve already done is my own pattern because it is lettering and technically not reversible. The tension is so bad that the letters are barely legible. I can only read them from a distance. I’m seriously debating if I should frog it and start over with smaller needles. Will an even tension happen after a lot of experience? (Sorry for the overload of photos, I couldn’t decide which ones to post.)





I think it looks very good. No one is going to be inspecting this as closely as your initial photos and from the reasonable distance, the letters are very clear.
Yes, going down a needle size will tighten things up but honestly, it looks terrific.
