Don’t understand something in a pattern

I’m shaping shoulders in my first ever jumper. The pattern says ‘cast off 5 sts at beginning of next 6 rows then 6 at the beginning of the following 6 rows. 53 sts’. I don’t understand what the last bit ‘53 sts’ means. Can anyone help please?

53 stitches left?!

Did you start with 119 stitches? If you cast off five stitches at the beginning of the next six rows that will remove ( 5x6) thirty stitches. If you go on to cast off six at the beginning of the next six rows (6x6) that is an additional thirty-six more stitches. Total cast off would be (30 + 36 ) sixty-six stitches. If you are left with only fifty-three stitches, I am guessing that you started with ( 66 + 53 ) 119 stitches. If not, just ignore me. I crochet a lot, but knitting is a bit of a mystery to me. I hope someone can be of more help than I have been. Welcome to the site. This is a great place to get answers to all your questions.
