I used 4 mm throughout and worsted weight yarn. It is true that the base will be an elongated octagon, but you are going to pick up stitches around it, so you will end up with an oval once that part is done.

I cannot find the baby doll on Herrschnerrs website… did you find it in a store or online?
I’m so sorry to hear that! I bought them online and I just searched my email. I was wrong; I bought them from MaryMaxim.com. FYI , some of them have not-so-pretty smiles/no smile. You can’t pick and choose.
I also found stuffed ones at Walmart in store around Christmastime several years ago. They’re already dressed.
You can google “Lots of love baby doll” or “5” itty bitty baby doll” for other vendors.
