Hello all…
This weekend approaches and a Girl Guide camp is planned. This might usually excite me, but I am really put off.
The leader that has organized it, chooses 1 day before camp to hold a meeting with our girls (there are only 3 going) for planning a menu and review of camp gear.
Tell me…as a parent, would you not find that totally off putting? The three girls in question will now have to go out (hours before camp) and buy food for a meal, and these girls also haven’t had any contact with this aformentioned leader between Mid May and now about camp. Without this contact…it would be easy to plan over the dates…
I don’t know…I am severely cranky about it. She waits until today, to tell me we are having a meeting about going to camp on Friday…WOW…Yes…I did know the dates before hand, and had them set aside. I am just really angry that she chooses the night before for this meeting. I think it is so disrespectful, for me, and for the girls!
If I were at the reins, I would have had this all done a month ago!
I am glad I am going to be the Guider in Charge next year, because between planning over one of my events, completely forgetting to pick up cookies (I get a call from the commissioner with 30 mins notice that no one from our unit has picked up cookies…dropping the ball right into my lap with no notice) and totally screwing up the books, I am in NO mood to go camping with this woman! At all!
Thanks for the rant…and think of me this Saturday…in the rain…with the above mentioned incompetence…
As a parent, I sure wouldn’t be happy with a last-minute meeting and having to shop hours before camp. My daughter just left for camp with school. Even with most shopping dealt with last weekend, we had an errand afterschool, then several loads of laundry and packing to do last night.
I hope the weatherman is wrong and you manage to have fun with the girls, despite the other leader.
Yeah…I am sure I will…
I am not a summer camper…last few times I have been out in the heat, I have gotten heat exhaustion. I will try to keep an eye on it this time, but when I am at camp, I tend to forget about eating, with my mind on so many other things. Fortunatly this is not my camp, so I shouldn’t be so distracted.
I am just really angry with her…and I think it is the height of disconsideration really. Just cause she wants to do things by the seat of her pants, and this is an outdoor camp. Requires a little more attention than indoor camps. sigh
Ok…I had fun enough…but then got pissed off again, when coming home, having to store all the units EVERYTHING…I am taking over the unit, and someone keeps finding one more box to hand over. More like DUMP over…I currently have two HUGE rubbermaid tubs, one small rubbermaid tub and a folding table that have come my way, and am now still expecting all the paperwork, campstove and yet another craft box. sigh
This is making me bitter. I am taking over the pathfinder unit, I am not moving in a tiny camping supplies store…!
Sorry…just had to rant again…
I don’t know anything about how Guides is organized or run. Is there a central office that could store this stuff for you? Or would that make it ‘shared property’, meaning you might not get it back when you actually need it?
If you’re getting all the stuff, I’ll assume the previous leader was wharehousing it also. Try to see it as a good thing. You will know exactly what resources you have to work with as you start planning things.

Nah…it has always been keep your own stuff. The offices are for paperwork…it is the “ground troops” that keep the units running. I don’t mind keeping craft stuff and my own paperwork. I have always had this stuff around. I just don’t like all the camp gear I have now inherited. It is big and takes up a lot of room!
And even better, I will probably only use it once a year! The problem is if it goes to a central place…it could get lent out to other units and “lost” to us forever…or just simply used and cared for badly.
It is a catch 22 really!
