I was wondering if you ladies actually make money spinning/dyeing/etc
or is it just a hobby?
I don’t see any way I could make money spinning, knitting etc., but I’ve been reading some of the spinning group posts on Ravelry and a number of people have fiber businesses. Some larger than others. I think you have to have above average skill and artistic talent to make any appreciable amount of money.
I make some money on my fiber, dyed fiber, hand spun yarn & finished objects (knitted, crocheted, woven). Also from lessons of the above.
Not enough to quit my day job, but enough to make it interesting.
I stilll working on mine but have a plan of action and great to see some freebies up for offer…yeeh
There are a couple guys out here too…
The more you process your product the less you really “make”
So we like to sell “raw wool”, mixed/dyed wool, yarn, and knitted items… in that order.
But you have to find an outlet. Online or on the block. We have a bit of both. We use Local Harvest, http://www.localharvest.org/farms/M25637 and a local Village Market, http://www.henrysvillagemarket.com/.
We just sold out of all the hats, mittens, and scarves we had at Henry’s so we’re knitting away again now.
Good luck

The way I look at it is, if I get enough $$ for either yarn or fiber or completed items, to pay for my hobby, then I am ahead of the game. If I consider it as $$/hr., then I’m working for less than peanuts.
