Do I actually need a cable needle?

I’m thinking about knitting the wonderful Starsky and this would be my first attempt at any kind of cabling.

Now, the pattern calls for “cables” being 1 st wide. (For example: 2-st RC: Sl 1 to cable needle and hold to back of work, k1, k1 from cable needle.) I’m wondering if I can skip the whole “put in a cable needle and move it around and knit and take the cable neelde out” when it comes to “cables” being this thin. Can I instead keep the stitch that was supposed to go on a cable needle on the original needle and just make sure I “skip it” and knit the stitch after it before I knit it?

Did that make sense to anyone? :??

I imagine this would save some time but I’m not sure. It might mess upp the crisp look of the design?

I don’t know how to do cables, but I did see this in an episode of Knitty Gritty…check out the web site

Usually when there’s a 1/1 ‘cable’ it’s called a twist and you knit the second from the tip first and then the first, just like you said. That’s what I would do, for sure.

Thanks for that link! It showed me that my thinking was right.

Great! I now have yet another word in “knitting English” in my vocabulary. The interesting thing is that I have learnt to knit from patterns and directions in English and have such a hard time talking about knitting in Swedish as I don’t know the words… [/quote]
