Hi ! I am beginning my first sock ever, and I’m not sure how to divide the stitches between the 3 needles. The stitches are all cast on, but how do I make needle 1 the one I begin with? HELP!!!
The one you begin with is the one where the first CO st was made. Just put the stitches on the needles, join the yarn, and that’s needle 1.
if you have cast on the st onto one needle then you simply slip the stitches onto the other needles as you need them (say 20st on each needle) Then wehn you join to work in the round, needle 1 is the needle in your left hand (witht he st you cast on first as Sue said) needle 2 is the middle one and needle 3 is the needle in your right hand with the working yarn coming from it.
Yeah, the needles aren’t marked 1, 2, or 3, it’s just whichever one you start with that’s called 1, the next is 2, etc.
Hiya nicol, n welcome to the wonderful world of sox!!!![]()
Here’s how I divide my stitches for my sox; I cast onto one needle (so i don’t get that awful laddering between needles) I then knit half the total amount of stitches onto my first needle, then divide the remaining onto the other two, then knit with the fourth. Usually the greater number of stitches I use for the heel portion and the other two needles I use for the instep or top of the sock. I also consider the heel needle as #1. Then the instep needles are #2 n #3.
Hope that helps ya hun.:knitting:
I highly recommend looking at Silver’s sock class. It is the best on the net.
If the pattern doesn’t tell you how to arrange the stitches on the needles - this is what I do:
Look at the pattern and see how many stitches are used when you will begin the heel (that is the number of stitches that I divide between needles 1 and 3). The rest of the stitches are the instep stitches and they go on needle 2. I find this works best when beginning the heel as you can finish the previous round, knit the stitches on needle 1 - turn the work and purl back over needle 1 and keep going onto needle 3 (placing them all on one needle to work the heel and turn). That way you don’t have a lot of juggling to do for the heel.
