I have several heavily cabled garments/afghans I spent many many hours making that were stored in a plastic bag in my attic. To my horror, I found mice had gotten in my attic. I am making a reasonable assumption that maybe these mice went through that bag of knitted items and they may have mice urine on them. Can anyone give me suggestions (other than throwing them out) on how I could disinfect the wool without weakening it? It is not a superwash wool. I read that white vinegar and hydrogen pyroxide could be used. Does anyone have a recipe using those items that I could make an attempt to disinfect them? thank you for any help!!
You could wash the knit wool items in a wool wash or mild dish soap. Let them soak in the wash for say 30 minutes then spin in the washer spin cycle for 3-4 min to remove most of the water if using wool wash. Rinse several times then spin if using a dish soap. Vinegar added to the rinse wouldn’t hurt but the soap and water should do it.
This will work for wool or acrylic but if acrylic you can probably wash in a machine in a laundry bag on gentle cycle.
Give it a try and see if that is enough or possibly you might need to repeat to feel safe.
