I thought that maybe this would be a good way for me to practice but what kind of yarn would I use for this? and where would I find a pattern?

this should keep you busy for a while and i think a lot of us use Lily Sugar n Cream (is that what it’s called? ) which is usually right around $1 a ball…comes in any ol’ color you would want to match your kitchen and won’t break the bank while you are practicing. AND it’s pretty good stuff!
can be found at hobby lobby, michaels, etc.

Lion Brand also makes a cotton that works well. Gives you more options. 
One more yarn option - Peaches and Cream, I think it tends to be a little softer than Sugar and Cream, and it’s about $1 at Wal-Mart.

with cotton tho remember that it doesn’t have much elasticity…so it might seem a smidge more difficult to work with…just get used to it, and then poof, you go to the other yarns…and it’ll be a breeze!!! 
It’s a great way to practice pattern stitches. If you have a stitch dictionary, just pick a pattern you like and knit up a swatch. Borders are nice, especially if you are using a pattern that tends to curl. Garter and moss stitch make nice borders.
As others have pointed out, 100 percent cotton is best and the three big manufacturers are Peaches and Cream, Sugar and Cream and Lion. Cottontots is also an option and makes a very soft cloth. Some people use cotton blends like Aunt Lydia’s denim.

Hi! I used to think it was kind of corny to knit a washcloth when you can buy a whole 10 pack for $2.99 or whatever… but then I knitted one and I LOVE IT! It’s so cute but more important is yeah, you can learn new stitches and then see what you would like to make out of them.

I’ve knitted quite a few of these (bought one of those pattern booklets at the craft store with about 12 patterns in it) & they last such a long time. I’ll never buy dishcloths again.
Those knitted dishcloths make wonderful gifts too! I’ll make a couple that work well together, then put them in a basket with some soap or dishwashing liquid, and some kitchen or bath gadgets. Instant gratification.
What a great idea! I never thought of that! I love dishcloths because they are quick and fun and easy way to try new stitches!!
