Ok, so I gotta ask: what’s so great about using knitted dishcloths? Doesn’t all the dirt get trapped between the stitches? I don’t know, my first reaction is “Yuck” but they seem to be so popular, there has to be something I don’t get.

well that’s why you wash them. I don’t have much interest in making them for some reason but my mother would be delighted if i did. my grandmother used to make all of her dishclothes for her but mom stopped using them when she was down to the last couple because she wanted to keep them. She wants me to make them for her so she can start using them again but i can’t get excited about it. and i have about 1 millllllllllllyun balls of sugar n cream too. sigh
Where are you from in south Wales? I’ve been to Port Talbort and Swansey and I loved it there. The welsh are lovely. (The ones I’ve met)
Tamar, I live in Quakers Yard, a little village about 40 minutes drive from Swansea, but nearer to Cardiff - the Welsh are lovely, but I’m actually English, I came here for Uni and kind of got stuck!
Thanks for the tip about the towel and soap wrap. I may just do that!

Knitted dishcloths hold up longer than a store bought kind. The store bought ones are usually these thin flimsy things or the terry cloth type. Cotton yarns come in an aray of fun colors. When knitting them the colors are fun, you get something useful, and they are fast so that instant gratification need is fulfilled. You can also practice new stitch patterns on them and get a pretty design into the bargain. If your design doesn’t look right, you still have a functional dishcloth. Even when the colors do fade, they still fulfill their dischloth function. It’s actually better to use dish cloth in general instead of a sponge. Dishcloths get washed (and some folks bleach them) to get rid of bacteria. A sponge sits on your counter and grows all sorts of nastys. :ick:
I’ve never knitted dishcloths, but I’d like to give it a try.
I hope this isn’t a dumb question… …but can you use the same patterns for face cloths as you do for dish cloths?
These would make nice gifts I think. It would be fun to make dish/face cloths for family members with their favorite hobbies and interests on them. I hadn’t realized there were so many different patterns out there!
How many dishcloths can you get out of one ball of yarn? (say maybe a 95 yard ball)
Hand-knitted dishcloths work better than the ones you buy at the store? Are they too thick to get into glasses to clean? :??

I don’t see why not. My dishcloths are super soft. In fact, I knit my first one at a soccer game that was two and a half hours from my home. My son (12yo, mind you) loved the texture so much he used it to wrap around the seat belt near his face so he could nap on the way home without the seat belt cutting into his face.

I’m not sure about the exact number…would depend on your gauge, finished size, etc. But, from what I’ve done, the yarn seems to go a long way.
Dishcloths are really a great, quick, easy thing to whip up. Go ahead…try it!!
Niffer,
Just surfing the net and came across this page. Just to give you some more ideas.

Jan, I meant to say, I’ve made several of those and they are deceptively easy and fast.
