Difficulty understanding pattern

I am trying to knit a hat by Heather Lodinsky. Her pattern can be found on Ravelry supposedly, but I can’t locate it there. I was sent it via email by a friend.(who wants this hat)

The pattern is a 4-row textured one, with 86 stitches in a row.

The 4 rows:
Row 1: P4, k6,p6 to last 10 sts, then k6p4.
Row 2: K4, p6,k6 …p6k4
Row 3: knit
Row 4: purl
My question: within a row, I can see that there are 4 stitches at each end of the row and 12 stitches in the center panels.
So why is the number 10 in there? (as in "repeat to last 10 stitches then k6, p4). Won’t this make the article uneven on each side?
you’ve got 4 stitches on the left, then 12, 12, 12, 12…then 6 and 4 again on the right. Why 6?

can anyone understand my question? and can you also answer it and unravel my confusion? (maybe my brain has a dropped stitch in it somewhere).

I don’t want to begin if there is a problem with this pattern. But another friend (who is currently unreachable) has knit several of these hats and completed a few hats just fine. I just want to understand it well before I begin.

Thanks in advance! (TIA!)

The hat appears to be worked flat and then seamed.

You have P4 at the start and P4 at the end. Once you seam, thus removing one st from either edge, you will have P3 at the start and P3 at the end. Together these sts create a 6st section (3+3), which will then line up with all the other groups of 6.

Trust the pattern.

AHHHH…that makes sense. Thank you RochesterKnitter, wherever you may be. I’ll just go at it then. Trust - such a comforting word.

I finished knitting the hat, now am trying to seam it up (knit on two needles). I watched Amy’s video here on mattress stitch, and am doing that, in between coming on here (and cups of coffee, and going outdoors to feed the birds, and…and…)
