Differnce between Garter and Knit stich

Hi,

I assumed that Knit and garter stich is the same, but in some patterns they say rows 1-6 garter stich and for some rows they say knit. Does row 1-6 garter stich mean 12 rows of knit or just as usual 6 rows of knit. Guide me.

Thanks…

Garter stitch is when you knit every row, so six rows of garter is six knit rows.

A pattern may tell you to knit a row, but one knit row doesn’t equal garter, if that makes any sense.

knit one row, Purl one row makes stockinette
garter makes Purl rows with a gap in between (the back side of the other sides stitch)

so KKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK
PPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP
KKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK
PPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP

makes soft sweater smooth fabric with a right (knit side out) and wrong side (purl side forward) respectively as long as you are knitting straight and not in the round

Garter makes

KKKKKKKKKK
kkkkkkkkkkk
KKKKKKKKKK
kkkkkkkkkkk

both sides look like a Knit row then a Purl row to the visual
or the ridges like a garter belt

hope this helps
