I completed a row of long tail cast on, but when I go to the next step, which I assumed was the knit stitch…the woman in the video already has a lot knitted. What do I do with my one little row…it’s confusing because I have my long tail in the way. When I try and do the knit stitch it just makes a mess. Any advice? Are there any videos that take it from that first row?
Thanks!
Staci
P.S. I’m trying to learn online, I don’t know anyone that can knit.
When you work the first stitch, especially of the first row, it will feel kind of loose. Just let the tail hang and go for it. Knitting the first row is the same as knitting any other row, so give it a shot and work a few rows.
If you’re still having trouble, maybe you could post a picture of what you’re getting? Then we might be able to see what’s up.
Hang in there–you’ll get it!
If you look at the video on the the Tips page, Demo of a Small Project, it shows how to do the first row. The vid takes you from cast on, knit a few rows then bind off, so you can see how all the parts come together.
For the tail yarn, you can either cut it down to 6 inches or so, knit it with the first st (which I don’t like to do) or just push it out of the way.
What I do is knit both the tail and working yarn together for the next 3 sts then continue the pattern with the working yarn only.
When knitting the second row remember those 3 sts are going to be doubled up (because you knit both the tail and the working yarn together)
after finishing the second row I snip the tail off about 1/2in from the work.
