Dewey cable pullover from vintage knits book

hi everyone,

this pattern is done in a one piece starting from the bottom back and working to the front. Here is my dilemma, I’m at the front side of the pattern with 84 sts, which calls for decrease row: ending with row 1 of cable panel. with 76 sts remain. I understand the decrease row but it doesn’t match the back side of the sweater. How do I knit to make it match the back side because I like how the set up row of the cable look on the picture provided with the pattern and my patter doesn’t look like that at all.

cable panel:
set-up row:p3,[m1,k1,m1,p3] twice 15sts
row1,3,5,7: k3 [p3,k3]twic
row2: p3,[t1R,p3] twice
row4,6,8: p3[k3,p3] twice
repeat rows 1-8 for cable panel

decrease row: k18,p3 [k3tog,p3] twice, k18, p3 [k3tog,p3] twice, k18, 76 sts remain

back side bottom:
cast on 78 sts. begin 1x1 rib for 1 1/2". then it said establish cable pattern: 18 sts, work cable panel:p3,[m1,k1,m1,p3] twice 15sts. work St st over 18.

front side bottom:
ending with row 1 of cable panel. work decrease row as for back 76s remaining. next row: change to 1x1 rib. work even for 1 1/2" ending with a WS row. BO

the decrease row before the 1x1 rib does not match the back side bottom 1x1 rib with the increase starting with the set up row and then the rows 1-8 of cable panel.

help!
Thanks in advance!!!

I don’t have your pattern but I found a picture of it at least on Ravelry. I think I understand what you mean by the way it is made… Cast on at the bottom then knit to the shoulders, evidently bind some off at the neck then recast them on after you leave a hole for the head to fit through then work down on the other side.

I saw that there was errata mentioned for this pattern. I don’t know if that relates to your problem at all. Have you got that information?

What I notice is that the way it is started in the front that you do the ribbing and then the increase row is the first thing you do when you begin the cable panels, then the very next row is a cable twist. When you work down the other side it sounds like you are saying that you have the 84 sts and it tells you to do the decrease right after a row 1 of the pattern st. Since you cross the cables on row 2 at the beginning you crossed real soon after you established the cable, but here you would be crossing on row 2, then working rows 3,4,5,6,7,8, 1 and then the decrease row. Is that right? So it would look quite different. One would have a cable cross right near the ribbing and the other wouldn’t.

I suggest you try doing the next cable cross, so work row 1 like it says, then do a row 2 cable cross, then on the very next row do the decrease. That would put it on a purl side, but that is okay. The cable panels would be P3tog, k3, p3tog for each. Then begin the ribbing on the next row.

This idea adds an extra row, but I don’t think that would be the end of the world, just make it work when you sew your side seams. I don’t think this will make them look identical and maybe nothing would short of doing both sides from the bottom up, but it may be better. I think it will be less noticeable and fit in with the look you have going.

Hi, Yes i did get to the errata but has nothing to do with my question. i’ll try it your way and i know its not the end of the world but would like to have a sweater that looks like the sweater provided with the pattern. Thanks for the response.
