Desperate help with Hopeful by Jenna Adorno

I’m so confused by this pattern. I’m so confused with the neck I need someone to dumb it down like you’re explaining it a child lol. Also I do not understand short rows. I have seen so many videos and still don’t understand it. so if someone can dumb it down for me as well with this pattern I would really appreciate it. I’m going to be leaving on Saturday for NYC so if someone can explain it to me before then I would appreciate it. I’m about to tear this whole thing out. This has frustrated me more than any other pattern I’ve ever done.

Not everyone has access to the pattern, but if you write out just the rows that have you frustrated and why, some of us could probably help you out.

I’m frustrated with the whole thing. First of all you pick up and knit every other stitch around the neck. Set aside. Using double pointed needles or shorter circular needles cast on 14 stitches and then do a 2 x2 rib for 7 1/2 inches. ending with a wrong side row. next row RS work in pattern to last stitch. knit last stich together with first picked up stitch of neckline. Next row WS work all stitches in pattern as set. repeat these 2 rows knitting last stitch of band together with next picked up stitch of neckline until all picked up stitches have been worked. Work band for 7 1/2 inches more. Bind off all stitches in 2x2 rib. My question is the whole neck in rib? Also if I follow these directions and repeat the 2 rows for all 14 stitches that seems like an awful lot of rows for a neck. Also it says to work band for 7 1/2 inches more do i do that for the original band or do i add another band?

It’s not exactly short rows, you’re going to be knitting the neckband onto the sweater instead of sewing it on. Break it down into pieces… you have the picked up sts on holders or another needle, then work the ribbing for 7½". Knit the next row, knit the last st of the row with 1 st from the neckline. Then turn and do a row of ribbing, and on the row after that, knit the last st with a st from the neckline. Keep going until you have knit all the picked up sts. Then continue knitting the ribbing for another 7½"

Yes, this ribbing goes around the neck, maybe you use smaller needles for it, but it’s a V neck, so there should be a lot of rows. The 7½" ends are for the tie in the front.

the short rows are for the sleeves. this is just the neck for right now. When I did the neck like 5 times and my mom did it the same amount and tore it out. i did what it said and knitted the band on every RS row with the next stitch and it ended up not being in the middle. i’m still confused lol.

You only knit the last st of the RS neckband ribbing with a stitch from the sweater, not every stitch. And it’s going to take several rows for it to look like it should.

I thought it was with the first stitch you picked up and then the next row you do that it’s with the second stitch of the sweater and then the third and so on and so forth.

This is what you wrote and how I interpret it - “next row RS work in (rib) pattern to last stitch (of ribbing). knit last stich (of ribbing) together with first picked up stitch of neckline.”

Then do a row on the ribbed band and the next row, knit the last st of it with the 2nd st on the sweater.

i did that last night and it put the band almost up to the shoulder seam which isn’t right.

I’m sorry then, I don’t know how else to explain it to you or why it’s not working out for you.

me either. thank you for the help though.
