[color=blue]I learned to design my own patterns after making many, many (many) sweaters from published patterns.

I did a lot of sewing at that time, so I knew the basic shapes of garment pieces.

I started by making changes to published patterns. Usually changing set-in sleeves to raglan yokes.

I think it depends on what the item is whether it will be easy or hard, and, of course how experienced you are. If it’s a scarf or similar type thing, it’s just a matter of finding a stitch or combination of stitch patterns you want to use, a yarn you like, and going for it. :XX: If it’s a fitted garment, ask someone else!!! :notworthy: Something in between, is, well, in between.
My proudest example is a full-size book bag I made for my DS. He asked me to totally do it myself, so I didn’t use any pattern or anything. Got approximate measurements from the standard store-bought one he had, got some heavy duty yarn and just knit until it was the shape and size it needed to be - by eye, I guess you’d say. Put on a pocket, lined it, adjustable straps… He’s used it for almost a year now and it’s holding up pretty well. :happydance:

What is it you want to make? I’ll bet someone here can help find a pattern, or give suggestions if you’re more specific. Good luck!!!
