When patterns say to slip a stitch and does not indicate k or p, is there a “default” method. should they be slipped purlwise unless otherwise indicated?:think:

Depends where it is and what you do with it next. At the beg of a row or if it’s going to be slipped without working on it again in the same row, slip purlwise. If it’s slipped to work a decrease, as in ssk or sl k psso, you slip knitwise.

All you need to remember is knitwise if it’s a dec, as if to purl otherwise. At least I think that covers 99.99% of slip sts…
Maybe explaining why would help – if you slipped it knitwise and left it for the next row, you’d have to knit it through the back loop to not be twisted. If you slip purlwise, it keeps the st orientation the same, so when you get to the next row, you work it like a regular st. But in a dec on the same row, slipping purlwise would be like knitting it through the back loop and it’s twisted. Maybe that’s tmi, just remember the first sentence…
