When you knit two strands together … it is easier to wind your ball with one strand and then knit with two strands using the center pull strand and the outside strand than to wind the ball with two strands !
Especially from a hank!

That’s what I did. But, when I pulled my thumb out (I use my thumb to wind the balls on), I had wound it too tight and a bunch of the “guts”, that were stuck to my thumb, came out. So, I had to untangle all that, and now that strand, from the center of the ball, is much much longer than the outside strand.
What I ended up doing was just cutting the long one to the size of the other one. Then I got the cut piece going since I’m just using it for the swatch anyway.
I’m worried though…the yarn is so thin, and even though I’m making the smallest size (for a 32’’ bust) and the pattern says that up to the 34’’ uses 2 balls…I’m worried that I won’t have enough. I don’t even want to do a swatch, cuz I’m just concerned I’ll run out. But, since I’ve never used such thin yarn I’m gonna do one anyway.
I was thinking about buying another hank, but if I don’t need it, I don’t wanna get another one since I’ll probably never use it with anything else.
Suggestions? Just get it now anyway, just to be safe and if I don’t need it, then just take a loss for 5 bucks? Or, wait and see if I need it and run the risk of it not being available anymore?
I dunno. :??
Those things just make it easier. You don’t need them. Use your feet to hold the hank, and wind the yarn onto your thumb, or like someone else suggested, a hairbrush handle. That’s what I’m going to do with my next one, cuz I think there’s much less of a chance of the handle getting all sweaty and sticking to the yarn.
I usually wind when I’m watching a movie. Gotta sit down anyway right? ![]()
my LYS will take returns on yarn if it is still in it’s hank or skein…does yours?

I thought the hairbrush thing sounded like a good idea, tho’ a little hard to handle with the bristles and all. Couldn’t you use a toilet paper or kitchen toweling roll, sort of a la kite string? (My girl scout leader training coming to the forefront.)

Hmm. I dunno. I didn’t buy it from them, or you mean they take it even if you didn’t buy it there? That’d be handy. ![]()
I should ask. (I’ve only been there once…to get my Denise’s.)
Hmm, yeah that’d probably work too.
I don’t even have a hairbrush at this point. I haven’t needed a brush for over a year. I should probably go pick one up.
Or two, and then I can cut the bristles off one and use that for winding. ![]()
(Edited to combine two posts)
lol well no i haven’t tried to return yarn to a store i didn’t buy from but could you return it to where you did buy if you didn’t use it?
I got it online. From KnitPicks. Do they take returns?
Here’s their return policy on their site (and i got distracted by pretty colors while i was over there too…sigh)
We want you to be satisfied with everything you buy from Knit Picks. If our products do not please you for any reason, merely return them to us within 30 days for a full product refund. Items returned after 30 days are subject to a 25% restocking charge. Please fill out the back of your invoice and indicate whether you prefer a refund or exchange for the amount of the product. Please note: We can refund shipping costs only if the return is a result of our error.
Ah, thanks.
Hopefully it won’t take me over a month to make the shirt then.
Coolest thing EVER! I never even thought of making my own. Tomorrow, off to search for supplies! :happydance: Thanks for the tip!
I just put the hank around my knees. Looks quite silly but works for me.
I use the back of a wide chair that has arms. It’s a sort of Windsor chair, so the back is rounded at the top, and while the yarn doesn’t come off the hank as smoothly as it would with a swift, it’s pretty good. Although I still have to be really careful not to get snarls.
I’m going to look for stuff for the homemade swift as well, though. How cool is that!
Geez, what kind of yarn did you all get from Knitpicks that’s so much trouble? I just ordered some Crayon cotton, WOTA and Merino. I’m into my 3rd ball of the crayon and have had no problems - love the way it’s working up. Am I in for hassles when I start in on the WOTA and Merino???
Linda
nah i think the problem is generally with yarn that is in hanks.
