I’m ripping out a UFO and will be reusing the yarn (Encore wool blend). Since it’s a really old UFO, the yarn will be very wavy. What’s a good way to straighten it before I reuse it? Thanks!
Decrinkle ripped-out yarn
I generally just roll it back up, but if the crinkles concern you, you can wrap it around a chair back or something and spritz it. Or roll it in a hank and leave it in a steamy bathroom.
I wish I could remember a website where I found directions on how to deal with this. I did it once and it worked really well. I wound the yarn around 2 nails measured 1yd apart, this part so I knew exactly how much I had, then I took those bunches of yarn, tied them in a few places so they wouldn’t unwind or get tangled, and put them in a bath tub full of hot water. I didn’t agitate them at all, just left them to soak. Then took them out, wrung out the water really well and hung them to dry. I put weights on the bottoms to pull the yarn straight, and once they dried, there were very few kinks left.
I’ll search around and see if I can find that website again, it was very very helpful.
Here’s the link I was looking for:
http://www.az.com/~andrade/knit/thrifty.html
It’s to do with recycling thrift store sweaters (which, by the way, is such a great and FUN thing to do!) but also describes how to decrinkle yarn.
I did that. hung it on a clothes hanger in the bathroom while I took a shower. it worked!
Thanks for the help! (Hope I posted this reply in the right spot–I’m a newbie!)
