Decreasing - math help needed!

OK, maybe I am mathematically challenged but this is just not working out as the pattern suggests. Am I totally crazy or is the pattern off?

Starting with 64 stitches:

Decrease row #1 - (K14, K2tog) 4 times

Decrease row #2 - (K13, K2tog) 4 times. (42 sts)

It’s that 2nd decrease row that has me totally confused. By my math, 13 knit stitches done 4 times will total 52 (13*4=52, right?) - already above the noted 42 sts. Add in the 4 from the k2tog and you get 56 total stitches. How in the world did they get 42 stitches?

If anyone has any help or suggestions, I’m all ears - well, all eyes! Thanks a lot!

Angela

I get what you get.

Do they tell you to either repeat these decrease rows, or to continue to decrease in this manner until you get to 42? Anything like that?

Nope! The next line in the pattern reads:

“Work even until piece measures 3.75” from beg."

That’s IT! It makes no sense to me at all. Plus, that’s a pretty big decrease down from the start of 64 to 42 stitches. I’m thinking it’s got to be wrong.

Thanks for letting me know that your math is the same as mine. I was getting pretty worried.

What is it a pattern for? And from where?

Um… it’s a secret project and I can’t tell but I can say this: it’s a small, short circular “thing” knit in the round and it’s from the book “Knit Wit”. It’s on size 6 needles with Cascade Fixation yarn. It narrows slightly as it goes down but nothing dramatic. It’s just a silly, funny project that I just wanted to try to make as a surprise for someone.

Does that help?

Ang

I should have been a detective!!

[1st paragraph unchanged]

Next rnd: (K14, k2tog) 4 times (60 sts).
Work even until piece measures 2.5" from beg.
Next rnd: (K13, k2tog) 4 times (56 sts).
Work even until piece measures 3.75" from beg.

Shape Bottom of Pint:
Next rnd: (K5, k2tog) 8 times (48 sts).
Work 1 row even.
Next rnd: (K4, k2tog) 8 times (40 sts).

 OH MY GOSH!!! How the heck did you do that? You are so slick that it’s scary!

Thank you for the update. I went ahead and did what seemed right and, it turns out, was right! Thank you much!

Now, looks like I will have to come up with something seriously unusual if I ever want to send you a surprise. :?? That would take a lot more brain power than I have to spare this evening. I may come up with something, someday, somehow… maybe?

You’re awesome! Ang

I just googled the book and got her site. There was errata there! If you bought me a car, I’d be really surprised! :roflhard:

OK! I shall put it on my list!

Seriously, you are super awesome! I love the fact that if you don’t know something, you know how to find out and… you should put that on your resume!

Any particular make/model of car or… just surprise you?

Ang

I’m not fussy!
