I am a newish knitter, your video clips have been awesome. I am knitting Garnstudio 96-6. The instructions say
"dec for sleeve cap and continue back and forth on needle from mid to arm. dec each side on every other row: 3 sts 1 time…
I know that I can only decrease at the beginning of each row, does it mean to decrease and then knit till the end, turn decrease and purl to the end, then do a plain knit and purl row and then start decreasing again on the next knit and purl row?
the english translation left out when to start the pattern for the top of the sleeve, I was able to figure it out from the swedish pattern. Do I do the decreases with whatever colour yarn that row is supposed to be done in?
That’s a beautiful sweater!
If you have to decrease more than one stitch, then you have to do it like you said–bind off, work to end, bind off work to end. If it’s only one stitch, then you can decrease at each end, every other row.
To be honest, I’m not sure that you should knit and purl a row between. Since you can only dec at the beginning and then work across, you are essentially decreasing every other row as it is.
Thank you Ingrid for your reply, I am still unsure of what I do.
I have knit the sleeve so far in the round and now am changing to knitting back and forth with a knit and purl to create the stocking st.
On the first knit row I decrease 3 st. and knit to the end of the row, and then decrease 3 st at the beginning of the purl row and purl across, am I right so far?
then what do I do, as the pattern says dec each side on every other row, can you explain more?
thanks, Gail
The way I’m looking at it is that when you decrease on the knit side and then knit across, then decrease on the purl side and purl across, you should do your next decrease on the knit side again, since it is ‘every other row’ that way, just not the same row on each side.
When you get to the decrease of 1 stitch per side, then you can do them at each end.
okay, that was what I thought it should be, thank you again for the help. One more question, if I am starting a pattern, using different colours, do I start the colour and do the decrease at the beginning of the row with the new colour, or start the new colour with the stitches after the decrease stitches?
Ah, so many questions, the first pattern I knit was in the round for the sleeves and body and joined together at the yoke. This is the first sweater I have done with shaping a sleeve cap.
thanks, Gail
I’m not sure it makes all that much difference, but I’d use the color that’s being used for the rest of the row.
