Decreasing at top of hat

Hi!-
I am knitting a hat on size 10 circular Addi turbo needles (love them!). I have completed two hats in regular stockinette, but this one is k2p2 ribbing. How do I make it look right when decreasing. I read somewhere that I should k2tog, p2tog all the way around when starting to decrease, but won’t that cause an all too sudden decrease? If I start decreasing like I did the other ones (k2tog, k8, k2tog, k8 etc.), the ribbing will be off. Is that just going to be the nature of this beast? I have 100 stitches cast on. Any hints?
Thanks,
Lynnea (inexperienced but love knitting!)

Try k2, p2tog, k2, p2, k2, p2tog, k2, p2, k2, p2tog, etc. On the next dec row, do the decs on the other p2s, then k2tog, p1, k2, p1, k2tog, and so on, then dec the remaining k2s. You should be down to k1, p1 around at this point, and you can start doing k2tog for a couple dec rows because you should be at the very top with only a few rows left and ribbing won’t matter anymore.

Here are some hats done with ribbing.

Thank you so much, Sue and Jan! I’m sure I can proceed just fine now. Great link, Jan! I printed it for my knitting notebook!
