Decreases for ruffle don't make scarf narrower

I’m working on a scarf that has a ruffle on the end. I started with 109 stitches and knitted the decrease row ( Sl1, K2tog, psso). I ended up with 37 stitches as the pattern said. The problem is that the width is still quite large. The finished width is supposed to be 6.5 inches and after the decrease row it is more like 11. I have completed several rows of the main body pattern and the width is still too wide. Am I doing something wrong? I would think that decreasing by so many stitches would decrease the width a lot, too.

Does your stitch gauge match that given in the pattern?

What yarn/needles did you use?
What yarn/needles did the pattern call for?

Edit: I see you also posted over at Ravelry and recieved an answer to your question.

The decreases make sense for going from 109 to 37sts. Can you give us a link to the pattern or even a pattern name?

I used Madelinetosh Pashmina and sizes 6 and 8 needles.
The main problem is that despite going down to 36 stitches from 109, the ruffle isn’t as gathered as the photo with the pattern plus the width is around 11 inches instead of 6.5 inches.
The gauge (which I got when I did a swatch) is 22 stitches per 4 inches.
The pattern is the Nina Scarf by Louisa Harding from her book Knitting in the Details. I’m making it without beads. Thanks.

I can’t figure why, as you have the same gauge, your scarf is that much wider.
Blocking might make it look more ruffly.
If you don’t get the effect you want following the pattern, consider doing it a different way.
Knitting Ruffles
I looked for a picture of your scarf and couldn’t find it.

I think this is a photoof the scarf taken from on of the projects on Ravelry. It clearly shows the decrease for the ruffle.
It may take a bit for the effect of the decreases to become obvious. I see that you’ve knit several rows but if you’re on gauge and down to about a third of the stitches it should work out.
How wide is the ruffle before the decreases (approximately, I know this isn’t easy to measure). Did you knit the gauge swatch in pattern?

I knitted the swatch in the body pattern. I’m done with this project despite all your help. I spent way too much time and I want to spend time and have something to show. Thanks to all!
